  • Step 2:  Now, in a mixing bowl, add rice flour, prepared jaggery syrup, and Nestlé MILKMAID.
  • Step 3:  In a blender, add bananas with water and blend. Add the prepared purée to the batter too.

  • Step 9:  Serve these warm & fresh!

Tips to Unniyappam

  • For authentic flavour, use ripe bananas. They'll sweeten and moisten the batter for tastier Unniyappam.
  • Get smooth Unniyappam by using fine rice flour. This prevents any unwanted grittiness.
  • Let the batter rest for at least 2 hours, as mentioned in the Unniyappam recipe, to meld the flavours and create softer Unni Appam balls.
  • Cook gently over medium heat to ensure even cooking without burning.
  • For a lighter and fluffier Unniyappam, add a pinch of baking soda.
  • Add cardamom powder to enhance the aroma and taste of Unniyappam.
  • Make sure to fry in ghee for extra richness and a unique flavour. Oil works too, but ghee elevates the dish.
  • Keep frying temperature consistent to avoid burning and raw center.
  • Add grated coconut for a delightful textural contrast and a touch of nuttiness.
  • Serve warm for the best experience. Unniyappam can harden as it cools.

FAQs on Unniyappam

1. Can I use sugar instead of jaggery in the Unniyappam recipe?rd?

You can substitute sugar for jaggery in the Unniyappam recipe, but the taste will differ. Jaggery adds a unique caramel flavour and texture that sugar lacks. If you use sugar, opt for dark brown sugar for a closer taste to jaggery.

2. How ripe should the bananas be to make Unniyappam?

For the best Unniyappam, use ripe bananas with brown spots on the peel. These bananas are sweeter and will mash easily, creating a soft and flavourful treat.

3. Can I make Unniyappam without a special pan?

Yes, you can make Unniyappam without a special pan by using a regular frying pan or a mini muffin tray. Grease the pan well with ghee, simply spoon the batter into the pan's hollows, and fry or bake until golden brown.

4. What is the shelf life of Unniyappam

For the best flavour and texture, enjoy your Unniyappam fresh. Unlike some snacks, this traditional Indian treat made with banana batter only keeps for 2-3 days at room temperature and up to 5 days in a fridge when kept in an airtight container.
